3 Tips when Looking at Wakeboards for Sale

Getting yourself the right wakeboard can mean the difference between a great wakeboarding summer holidays, and a summer holidays spent having a hard time wakeboarding especially if you purchased a board thats the wrong size or too advanced in its features! The following tips will provide you with the information required to set you on the right path to enjoying a summer full of great wakeboarding.

1. Size of Wakeboard

When it comes to purchasing a wakeboard, the first step is to determine the length of board that you’re going to need. This will be determined upon a variety of criteria. First of all, take a look at the following diagram to get an understanding of the relative length of the wakeboard you should be after as compared to your weight:

Weight Length
Under 100lbs 120cm
Upto 130lbs 132cm
Upto 150lbs 136cm
Upto 170lbs 140cm
Upto 190lbs 142cm
Upto 200lbs 144cm
200lbs+ 144cm+

Another factor in assessing the best board size for yourself is to consider your level of experience at wakeboarding. Keep in mind that a shorter board will provide you with greater maneuverability, and the ability to pull off better tricks, stunts and spins but at the same time the shorter board will be harder to stablize and use. On the other hand, a longer wakeboard will be a lot more stable therefore more suited to the inexperienced wakeboarder,  but on the flipside the longer wakeboard provides less maneuverability for performing tricks.

Also just as important is to consider other people that will be using your wakeboard alongside yourself. If you end up purchasing a smaller wakeboard, then a buddy of yours who’s a lot heavier than you may not be albe to use the wakeboard. This can be very common in a family situation. If this is the case, you should aim obtain a wakeboard that can easily support the heaviest user of the board.

2. Bottom Design Features

Different wakeboards for sale will come with completely different setups and designs, especially the bottom of the board. These different setups have optimised the board for specific purpose, for example some wakeboards may be better suited for maneuverability on the water, while others are designed with a smoother bottom surface for doing ramp slides. Some of the major design features includes the following:

Rocker: The Rocker pretains to the shape of the underside of the wakeboard. Different shapes and depths of shape are possible, where common shapes includes the “Continuous” which is a curve bowl shape from head to tow, while the “3-stage” Rocker shape has more a flat bottom and angled at both ends to form a trapezoid shape.

The Continuous Rocker provides better ability for spins and speed across the water surface, while the 3-Stage Rocker allows the rider to gain better jump height off the water. Choosing a rocker style simply comes down to your experience level and what you’re looking to achieve on your wakeboard.

Channels & Concaves: With different wakeboards, you’ll find a different array of Channels, Concaves or maybe the existance of neither. These features will complement the other features of the board such as the rocker setup in order to enhance the overall rider experience. “Channels” are simply deep grooves protruding from the wakeboard underside in a straight lines from head to toe. Channels works like fins to provide extra stability if required. “Concaves” on the other hand are little curved ripples on the underside which allows the wakeboard to sit higher on the water for attaining greater air jumps.

Fin Placement: Fins can come as part of a wakeboard or can be added additionally as per requirements. Fins are tyically added in pairs with either 2, 4 or even 6 fins on a wakeboard. Different fin combinations are available for different purposes but as a rule of thumb, the closer the fins are to the center of the board, the easier it is to air high off a jump. On the other hand, the closer the fins are to the ends of the board, the more stable it becomes for the rider but it is also harder to get air off the water. Especially for beginning wakeboarders, it is recommended that they use large fin for the extra stability that they provide. At the end of the day, it all comes down to trialing out different fin placement combinations to find out what setup suits you best.

3. Bottom Material

There are different materials available for the wakeboard underside which will serve it’s purpose if you’re at the intermediate level and wanting to wakeboard off jump slides and grinds. The extra material will provide an extra level of protection for your board while adding to the slider/grind experience. The different materials include Nexes, PBT, P-Tex and Urethane.
